The building on the left was the King’s Head.

In the1841 census Burton Street was classed as being part of the High Street, and the High Street was being called Dawley Green, District 6 of that census, only covered the odd numbered side of the street, and included Chapel Street George Street and the Brandlee, in a newspaper cutting dated February 1857 stated that a cottage adjoining, the King’s Head was occupied by John Rogers, on the census he is living next door to Roseanna Lane, occupation Publican, her husband John Lane had died in 1838.

In the 1851 census John Rogers is still living next door to Roseanna Lane, her occupation in this census is Licensed Brewer, Birth Place Wenlock, Shropshire.

In May 1855 Rosannah Lane died, she was buried at Malinslee on the 20th of May 1855.

At the Elephant and Castle Inn, Dawley-green afore- said on Thursday, 10th February, 1857, at six o’clock in the Evening precisely, in one lot, and subject to conditions to be then produced.
All that conveniently arranged Brick and Tile built Messuage or DWELLING-HOUSE, used as a Beer-house, formerly known by the name of the “King’s Head.” And latterly called the “Prince of Wales.” With the Brewhouse. Stable, Outbuildings, Garden, and appurtenances to the same belonging, now in the occupation of Mr. Thomas Bowdler ; also the capital COTTAGE or Tenement, adjoining, the before mentioned Dwelling-house, now occupied by John Rogers, the whole containing 0a 2r 5p. or thereabouts.
The above Property is well situate for business, having a good frontage to the main street through Dawley-Green, and near to the Market-Place.
The Tenants will show the Premises ; and any further information may be obtained at the office of the Auctioneer, Wellington, or from Messrs. A. and G. Phillips, Solicitors, Shiffnal.

Things get a little confusing in the 1861 census, the position for the pub in the census suggests Richard James is the publican, but two news paper articles say he’s pub is the “Royal Oak”?

Also, in 1863 Thomas Bowdler is advertising the King’s Head Dawley in the Post Office directory, and again in Slater's directory 1868, as a retailer of beer, Burton Street.

In the 1871 census Thomas Bowdler’s occupation is “Retired Beer Seller” and probably living next door to the pub, Henry Jones is now running the pub.

Henry had married Mary Bowdler on the 16th April 1861, I don’t know if Mary was related to Thomas Bowdler, in the 1851 census there was a Mary Bowdler working as a House Servant aged 16 at the Lord Hill Dawley which may be her?

1881 census, Henry Jones is still a carpenter & joiner, the beer seller is not part of his occupation on this census, although the pub is not named in the census it is in the same position.

Henry Jones died in 1882 and was buried at Dawley Magna (Holy Trinity), his wife Mary is now running the pub.

Thomas Jones died on the 17th November 1956, his wife Elizabeth Owen Jones continued to live at 5 Burton Street until c1966, it was around this time the building was demolished, and is now a car park.

This pub later became a privet house were Mr, Tom Jones lived (not the singer) The home of Mr. & Mrs. Tom Jones stood back at a respectable distance from the traffic. Alderman Tom Jones was a revered owner of local. small mines. He was thus an expert on Dawley's geology, but also, a Justice of the Peace. a Methodist local preacher whose sermons were laced with such down—to earth humour that you felt you should ask forgiveness for laughing so much in chapel. and a generally admirable character.

This short and quite tubby man would pause and chat to anyone as he emerged from his Morris Oxford car wearing flat cap. square-shouldered grey coat, and wellies. in any given part of the district. The Jones ‘s comfortable residence had ‘The Cosy’ cinema for a near neighbour.
